A HARDY ANNUAL
SPORTS GROUNDS AT HUTT
A subject which can be relied upon to produce an annual discussion was brought forward at last evening's .meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council in a report of the reserves' committee, which recommended that Rugby football should have two grounds on .the Recreation Ground at a cost of £75 for the season;'Association lootball one ground* at a-cost of £20- and hockey two grounds at a cost of £35. Councillor F. -Campbell asked why the Association code was being asked to pay £o more, than the previous year, while the charges for other codes remained the same.. . ' . .
Councillors Grierson and Ginger, members of the committee, said the committee had considered that as hockey was laying £35 for two smaller grounds a fair amount, to charge Association for one ground was' £20; also, the proportion of the "gates" given by Rugby, to Association under a private arrangement ' was greater than that given to hockey. Councillor Campbell said he could see no reason for altering what had been considered a fair charge the previous yeav, and he moved that the charge to Association be £15.
Councillor Anderson said ho viewed the matter from a different angle. He considered that no charge should be made to .sports bodies, but that the council should take the whole of the "gate1? money. • -
In answer to a question the. Mayor (Mr. W. £. Strand) said that the cost of grounds to the council was probably double the amount paid by the sports bodies. Councillor Anderson then moved that a return of the cost of the upkeep of the grounds be.presented.to the next council meeting, the matter of the rents to be charged to be held over in the meantime. Other councillors considered that an immediate decision was necessary. Councillor Ginger seconded. Councillor Anderson's amendment.
After further discussion the amendment was lost on the casting vote of the Mayor. The voting was as follows:—For: Councillors Wilson, Anderson, Meldrum, and Ginger. > Against: ( Councillors Grierson, Campbell, Patrick, and Mcßain.. ■
Councillor Campbell's" motion 'to charge Association only £15 was then! put and carried, again on the casting vote of the Mayor. \ It was decided to give hockey two. grounds on Trafalgar Park, to be reserved for ladies; and Association one ground on Bell Reserve.
