The. action of the Customs Department in banning certain American magazines' because of offensive advertisements is the subject of a short statement by the New Zealand agents for the magazines. The agents state that [suggestions that the relations existing between the distributors- in New Zealand and the American, publishers have some bearing on the banning of the magazines, are without foundatioE in fact. The position, the agents say, is that the Customs authorities, under section '$ of the Indecent Publications Act of 1910, advised the New Zealand distributors that magazines containing the offending advertisements would not, be allowed to enter New Zealand unless the advertisements were removed before the importation of the magazines. The publishers of the magazines were.advised, but were not1 prepared to print separate editions for the comparatively small quantity required for this Dominion. While negotiations were proceeding, the Customs authorities permitted the New Zealand distributors to cut out the advertisements before copies were circulated, but when the publishers of the magazines refused to delete the advertisements the Customs authorities advised tho distributors that no further, supplies of the periodicals containing the offending advertisements would be admitted into this-country;- -;■ ■ ■■■•: • :" ■■■ ■■ ■■.'.'■. i
