MANUSCRIPT STOLEN
SCOTT'S "GUY MANNERING'
ON LOAN FROM MR. MORGAN
NEW YORK, 22nd November.
A general police alarm directed to ■booksellers throughout the eastern section of the country to-day revealed the theft on 24th October of 200 pages of the original manuscript of Scott's "Guy Mannering," the property of Mr. J. P. Morgan and lent to Columbia University for . the Scott Centenary Exhibition. The value is not estimated, but it is assumed to' be high. The manuscript was locked in a glass case, and.it is assumed that the thieves used a duplicate key. Officials are inclined to believe that they are unfamiliar with manuscripts, as they passed over the incomplete manuscripts of "Ivanhoe" and '' Waverley," which are considered more, valuable." The theft was kept secret for some time in the hope that the thieves would make contact with the owner, as disposal of the manuscript is considered impossible.
