OPERA IN ENGLISH
High praise is given by "British" to the company -which was recently heard -in opera in Wellintgon, but the"writer asks why the operas cannot be produced in English. ''Twelve or .more. years ago a splendid company of English and Australian artists toured New Zealand and nearly all the operas were produced in English Among the men were Walter Wheately, fialph Errol, Carl Formes. Fred Collier, Browning Mumnierjr, and Charles Mettam,
and the women I believe were all Aus-. tralians, including Amy and-Dolly Castles, Gertrude Johnson, Strella Wilson. Patti Puissell, Elsie Treweek, and Mabel Carter, with voices fit to sing anything, and their ringing notes I shall never forget. We like the Italians. They are our very good friends, but-we cannot expect them to sing m English, and when there is so much good talent at our very doors, why should it not be used?" The writer suggests that this would add to the pleasure of the audiences, besides giving engagements to our own singers.
