; An excellent exhibition of arts and crafts was held at: the Pioneer Club recently, and was opened by Lady Luke. : She congratulated the circle heartily on- their good work, and expressed her. interest in it. Miss Boyd (president. of the circle) said that in order tOj.eneourage the art and craft work several prizes had* been given by members. Lady Luke presentedl these, the winners" being as follows:; — Knitting, Mrs. -Lang (Mi's.* .Glendinning's prize), Mrs;' Tamblyri ■: (Mrs. Butler's prize); needlework, Miss Shaw (Mrs. Hamilton's prize); rstools, Mrs. HayMacKenzie (Mrs. Peston's prize). Mrs. Finlay, for the best work taught by Mrs. Martin, won Miss A. Kane's prize. This was a beautiful collection of "Barbola" work, which came in for much admiration. There was also an exhibit of tapestry, a beautiful stool, akd a chair, the work of Miss Boyd and Mrs. McEldowney, which attracted "much admiring attention. It was generally considered that the exhibition was well up to' th'o standard of previous years, the work showing much variety and artistic inspiration. There was a large attendance of members and friends during the afternoon.
Members of the garden circle were the guests of Mrs. Knox Gilmer at her garden at Upper Hutt on Saturday afternoon, when a. large number availed themselves of the- opportunity of seeing such a beautiful and interesting display of flowers, and they had a delightful time, also visiting the bush at the back of the house. Mrs. Knox Gilmer entertained.all at afternoon tea, which was served in the large living-room under charge of Mrs. Moriee and Miss Mary Gilmer'. Mrs. H. R. Fisher (president of the:'.circle), thanked Mrs. Gilmei: for her hospitality, and announced that the hostess was .donating a trophy to the club for panties. The visitors gave hearty cheers for the hostess, and musical honours before their departure. The circle has enjoyed quite a series of these delightful afternoons. The members went to Waikanao one Say to sec tho well-known iris garden, whore they lunched, and on the way back were the guests of Mrs. W. Duncan .to; afternoon tea at .her..homo at "Golden Gate,'? Paremata. "Visits to the1 gardens of Miss Isaacs and Mrs. Wardell (Eastbourne), Mrs. Grey (Karori), Miss Boys (Kelburn), and Mrs. D. Anderson (Thompson street) all proved most enjoyable outings, highly appreciated by the members.
