Chinese "Joan of Arc." A girl lvho was formerly a student at the Shanghai Liankiang College has assumed the role of a Joan of Are in Manchukuo, and is leading Chinese volunteers iii their guerilla warfare against the Japanese, states an overseas -writer. Miss Yao Jun-fang, aged 24, is reported to have received her military training with the Cantonese Women's Bat talion, organised in 1926 when Soviet military advisers ■■ wore co-operating with the Kuomintang Nationalises. When that battalion was disbanded by General Chiang Kai-shek, Miss Yao entered Liankiang College, where she studied until last winter. After the Japanese invasion of Shanghai, Miss Yao (now called major-general) again put .on her soldier's uniform,, cut off her hair, organised a company.of volunteers, and journeyed 'northward. The girl is credited with leading Chinese troops in their recent assaults on Japanese garrisons along the ShanhaikuanMukden Railway. Her military sk,ill is the admiration of her followers, whose morale, when, under her leadership, is unassailable. Dance at Rongotai College. A very successful dance was held recently by members and friends of the Eorigotai College Old Boys' Association. About 150 attended the function, which was held in. the college assembly hall, attractively decorated for the occasion in Ithe ' college colours, orange and black. Flannels and summer , frocks, worn by the dancers, gave the hall an added brightness. Mr. K. McDonald was M.C. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Martyn. Kenoir, Mr. and Mrs. Heron, Misses Bromley, Laurie, AVatchman, Binnie, Battenberg, Williams, Duncan, Drawbridge, Lyghte, Connor, Bradstock, Lord, and Kensila, and Messrs. 'Edwards, Warner, Turnbull, Connor, Messer, Dougall, Miller, Avery, and Johnson. Children's Evening, The children of Te Horo were given a great treat on Saturday evening by the members of the Women's Institute. A Punch and Judy show was presented, and caused much delight among the young folk. Young and old greatly enjoyed the community, songs, a clown presiding at the piano. Games, led by the clown, then, took place, and caused much merriment. Soft drinks and other refreshments were served by the ladies of the institute at the conclusion, of this very, happy evening. Kelburn-Northland W.N.B. The annual meeting of the KelburnNorthland branch of the Women's National Keserv«- was held recently at the residence of the president, Mrs. Hargreavea. Mrs. Porter presided, and the. annual report and balance-sheet were presented and adopted, both being considered as very favourable, in view of the difficulties of tUe times. A great deal of good work had. been done, and the interest of the members was sustained. The election of officers took place, and Mrs. Hargreaves was reelected president. . Mesdanies FyfEe, Franklyn, Preston, and Mulligan were appointed vice-presidents, and Mrs. Parkinson was le-elected hon. secretary. Mrs. Porter gave a pleasant and interesting account of Residential Nursery affairs^ and afternoon tea was served and enjoyed. Mrs. Porter, Mrs. Hargreaves, and Mrs. Parkinson were each presented with a dainty posy of flowers. Women's, Exiiibijtion. A great deal of interest is attached to the Handcraft Exhibition arranged by the Women's Institutes of the Dominion, which will be opened by Her Excellency the Lady Bledisloe to-morrdw at 3 o'clock in. .the afternoon.' Exhibits of work from all over the country" will be there, and many will be of outstanding interest as showing what wonderful things can be accomplished by clever minds and fingers, out of the slightest materials. The exhibition will be held in. the Dominion Farmers' Institute Hall, and an advertisement gives further ■•details. ,! . . Successful Garden Tarty. '\ A most enjoyable garden party was held at Mrs. Ernest Dawson's home at Moiling on Saturday afternoon. Delicious afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. Dawson, and the guests enjoyed wandering about in the garden, which was gay with roses/ and also trying their skill at the excellent competition^ provided by Mrs. Kcrsley. The party was lield to augment the funds of the National Y.W.C.A., and the executive is most grateful to the committee of the Lower Hutt branch of the. League of Mothers and members of the Wel-
