CAPTAIN S. NICOLSON
The death occurred at Paraparaumu yesterday, after, a long period of bad health, of Captain. Samuel Nicolson, a former master in the' service of'the ■Union Company.
The lato Captain Nicolson was borii ia the Tsland of Skye, Scotland, on 15th. January, 1869, and-AyentJp sea in'sailing ships for four years. After a further period of three years in steamships, he joined the service of' the Union Steam Ship Company on 19th February, 1896, as second officer of the old Kawatiri. He served as second and thiud officer of various vessels until 21st January, 1901; when he was promoted chief officer 'of the Kobnya serving in- that capacity, in many ships until his appointment as master of the Kotuku on 28th January, 1907. Ho subsequently 'commanded the following ships: Te Anau, Koonya, Talune, Kaitangata, and Kurow, until his .'appointment to the old Waitemata on 21sfc •September, 1911. The late Captain Nicolson commanded the Waitemata through th& greater parfr of the war years, when the vessel was engaged in transport work for the New Zealand Government and Imperial authorities, and left the ship only a few; months, before she was torpedoed in the Eastern Mediterranean on 14th July, 1918. He returned to New. Zealand for- orders and was appointed to the' Wellington wharf staff oil 9th August, 1918. He resigned from the rMl*>any' B service on 31st March, 18flfcn§|fer his retirement the late Cfeggfci* -Ajfeolson lived on his fernt at Saft^^ffniu.
