GERMAN CLUB

A comedy entitled "Der gerade Weg der beste'* (Kotzebue), the date of action of which falls between 1815 and 1819, after the Napoleonic Wars, was acted yesterday evening before the German Club. Major yon Murten (Mr. E. Campbell-Begg), retired from active service to the seclusion of his country estate, is confronted in his capacity of Kirchenpatron with the task of choosing between two candidates Elias KniJMn (r>r.-K. p ense ] er ) and Eriedrich Wahl (Mr. V. Dinkel), for the position of Pfarrer (parson) of his parish. He enlists the services of his ward. Amalie (Dr. Hilda Heine), the young widow of the recently deceased parson. Amalie, however disagrees with the major's wish that she should marry the successful applicant. The village schoolmaster (Dr. I. Henning) arrives during the discussion, and it ensues that he has been deputed by Krumm to create a favourable atmosphere with the major. Amalie thereupon compromises and conceives the ruse of substituting the old housekeeper, Fran Krebs (Mrs. McKinnon) for herselt. The villain of the piece, Al'limm, then appears, ushered in by the major's body servant, Jakob (Mr Coventry), a retired cavalry sergeant-major. On being acquainted with the conditions by the major, Krumm at once proceeds to !ose a pecuniary heart to Frau Krebs \vahl, the other candidate, and Amalie are brought together fortuitously and mutually recognise their first love The play concludes with wedding bells for the happy pair and a sound rating for Krumm. °
