BOY UNEMPLOYMENT.

• ■&? I s of man? unemployed boys in Wellington must give cause for grave concern. The Boy Unemployment Committee is appealed to daily by lads who are able, eager, and willing to work, but despite trying can find nothing whatever to do. Many of the lads who have experienced long periods of idleness seem to nave got beyond caring, while others are sensitive about their position and frankly worried and suffering mental distress. A large number applying for employment come from homes already affected by the unemployment of the breadwinnw or other members of the family, inesfi lads at present are losing their essential earning power and valuable learning time; while in the future when apprenticeships, cadetships, and traininc opportunities again present themselves, they will be outstripped by the younger boys coming on. Apart from this aspect however there is the pressing • need of finding these boys some occupation. The Boy Unemployment Committee in Wellington earnestly appeals for openings for these boys. Curing the recent months one hundred and fifty boys have been placed on farms, and the committee feels that for the time being this is at least a partial solution. An appeal is made to farmers to take on an extra boy on their farms. There are excellent boys available, strong, willing, and-intelligent Many of them are able to milk and do odd jobs about a farm. All the committee asks is that each boy should be given a small wage, decent living conditions, and a reasonable opportunity to learn. Applications, addressed to the general secretary, V.M.C.A., 150. Willis street, will find a ready response. Provided full particulars of the employment are given and also adequate travelling directions, suitable boys bearing the recommendation of the committee will be dispatched to the farmer without delay.
