ROUGH DERBY RACE

DID BEST HORSE WIN >j

X"From "Vedette.")' • SYDNEY, 6th October. The AJ.C. Derby' was marred by roughness, and it is doubtful now if the best colt won. Peter Pan certainly scored in excellent style, so -well that he is now a warm favourite for both the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups, but Oro. had an unlucky run, and Game Carrington, apart from, being seriously interfered with, got his tongue over the bit and .naturally ran badly. ■ The scrimmaging took place at the mile ana a, quarter, where Peter Pan' took a forward- position and both Game Carrington and Oro were knocked back to last. Oro put in a strong run from the half-mile, but failed by half a length to reach Peter Pan. Game Carrington. was a. trifle light for many keen judges, but it is obvious.he did not show his real form.

-..Prince Pombal proved a worthy pacemaker. At the half-mile he shot away to put a further break of four lengths on Peter Pan, and was not gathered in.-until the straight was reached. Eventually he finished seventh, ana.was by no means, disgraced, .for. he was well ahead of Game Carrington. G. Price's candidate, Kuver.a, reached third place and battled on, the distance being just beyond him. He ran genuinely enough. ■
