RANDWICK CARNIVAL

CHATHAM'S EPSOM WIN

(From "Vedette.") : SYDNEY, 6th October. Public form as in most casea proved the reliable guide for the Epso'ra Handicap, ..the unbeaten,. Chatham keeping up his record", from the almost as consistent Rogilla. Chatham, had to be I ridden hard at the finish to hold- off Eogilla,'-who finished well, but it was obvious that Pike on' Chatham had let up on. his mount a little distance from the post and then, had to shake him up again._ . . Rogilla was deprived at the last minute of his regular rider, D. Munro's,. services, and indeed it was fortunate that the gelding escaped injury too in a collision at Randwiek on Friday. Munro waasent to hospital with a head injury, which has kept him out of the saddle at-the meeting. • ■-'.' Chatham, as expected, began smartly and" always held a good position.' Another -son of Windbag in Winooka made the pace, but Chatham sailed past him in the straight. Then Rogillaj capably ridden by Munro'a substitute, S. Cracknell, appeared with his • customary late inn, but Ec failed by half a length to overhaul Chatham. Winooka just beat Autopay, who ran. a gallant race with 9.8 for fourth place. Then finishing very fast came -Denis Boy, a run that was very instructive two days later when, the Metropolitan came up for decision.

Oratorian. ran an excellent- race, pacing it in front with Winooka for five furlongs. At the turn he was still just on the- heels of Winooka and Chatham, and sticking on ho was right np iji seventh place. Havering was not prominent at any part, 'and Gold Mag was inconspicuous throughout. - Chatham, although h*e started favourite; eased a trifle in. the betting and started at really: ■ remunerative odds.
