MOTOR CAMP SITE

ESTIMATED COST

MONEY NOT AVAILABLE

The opinion. that the Wellington Automobile Club should not at the present time contribute to the cost of the proposed motor camp sito at Moa I Point, Lyall Bay, was expressed by the chairman'1 (Mr. E. A. Batt) at Tuesday night's meeting of the club.

The matter- aTose out of a letter from the Town Clerk submitting the estimated cost of a camp site consisting of five acres. The following details were supplied:—Soiling and road formation, £1500; surrounding fence, £900; sai& tary accommodation, £500;* cookhqu»<& £250; gas rings, grillers, etc., £53 ss:; flood lights, £50; contingencies. £20; total, £3273 ss. •

The, chairman said that the cluh had been working on the^ question of a camp sito for some time. It rather, reflected on Wellington that it was practically the only, city in l^Tew Zealand that did not have a camp site. The land at Moa Point had teen levelled, and all it required now was soiling and grassing. If Wellington had a suitable site motorists would be induced to visit the city. As camping was becoming -very popular motorists were looking to; every city and town-in- New Zealand ttf have a good camping site. "I think there is very little chance o£ this work being carried out in view of the financial position of the conncil to-day," tie said. "At the same'time I cannot see how we can help it financially, and I don't think we should;?'

| Mr. 1.. Wilson aaid.thaf£3273 seemed a largo amount to spend on a camp site. There was no doubt, however, that it was one 'of the best available in Wellington, and -the clvb1 did not want to lose it.

Mr. E. Pallisor said he thought the club should endeavour to get the council to agree to put the five acres aside until a definite settlement was reached. If the ' Reserves Committee could be induced to put £500 a year into the project they would get it back again.

It was decided that the chairman and Mr. Pallisor should wait on the Reserves Committee.
