SMUGGLING GOLD
LONDON, Ist January. The "Daily Mail's" Cairo correspondent says that the high price of gold in Europe is tempting gold hoarders to sell their metal.
Speculators are resorting to various devices to evade the Government prohibition of the export of gold and are risking severe penalties.
Most of the successful gold-smuggling convoys have traversed the Sinai desert with camels, thence have passed through Palestine and Syria, whence the gold is shipped to France.
The vigilance of the Camel Corps traversing the desert tracks has now rendered this method hazardous. The corps made several big hauls. It is estimated that there are £10,000,000 to £.15,000,000 worth of gold in Egypt, mostly in the possession of peasants.
