CYCLE ROAD RACES

THE FINISHING POINT

COUNCIL GRANTS PERMIT

, A recommendation by the Bylaws Committee that no objection be taken to the cycle road races from Pahnevston North to Wellington on 10th October and 14th November, finishing at the Basin Reserve, provoked a fairly lengthy discussion at the City Council meeting last evening. The City Solicitor eaid there was always a possibility of pedestrians . being knocked down by the racing cyclists. If the council granted a permit it would have a moral, if not a legal, responsibility.

Councillor Gaudin said he did not think permission should be given to race through the streets. .;■■'■■.,.. ' '

No objection had^been taken befoi-e to races finishing.at the Basin Reservei ; said Councillor Duncans In any case it was unlikely that after Coming 100 miles the cyclists would be in condition to do much racing. .■;,'.■■ Councillor .Huggins, chairman of the committee, said they had been guided entirely by their: officers in framing the clause. The Mayor (Mr. T::C^ A. Hislop) pointed out that they had either to refuse or grant a permit. Apparently it was desired to allow the races to finish at the Basin Reserve, and at the same time to take no responsibility. He moved as an amendment that a permit be granted. ; The amendment was carried by 7 votes to 6. '. . . . : "■' \- ■' ■'". ,
