PEWA WINS NEATLY

PHAR LAP'S SISTER SECOND

Pewa left no doubt that he is an improving hack when, he won the Stewards' Handicap decisively from a fair-class field. He was always nicely placed, lying just behind Kiriana, Tripping, and Arrowzone as they swung into the straight, but then he came through smartly and was going away a length and a half ahead o£ anything else to the finish. He is a three-year-old bay gelding by Arausio from the Demosthenes mare Parearau,. and carries the i\ Ormond . silk. Good races should come his way before the season closes. There was a great struggle for second honours between Nea. Lap, Tripping, and Jayson, the trio finishing in that order with only short heads between them. Nea Lap was practically on terms with Pewa at the straight entrance after having made up ground all the way, and she finished very gamely to cut Tripping out of second money in the last few strides. She is the three-year-old full-sister to Phar Lap, and this' was her sixth start, all this season. She has improved in appearance since her first race, and much interest will now be manifested in her future career. A distance rather than a sprint would appear to be her forte. Tripping, Lordlike, and Pewa were all evenly backed, with a good drop to Dainty Ways and Tunbridge. Nea Lap had only £14 invested on her chance, and she paid well over a score for second. Lordlike was squeezed out at the start, and was never dangerous. After the race an inquiry was instituted by the stipendiary stewards into his running, but there was not sufficient evidence to _ warrant any action being taken. Dissatisfaction, however, was expressed in the way J. Barry handled him. Dainty Ways held a good position early, and, after drifting over the middle stages, finished full o£ running in seventh place. Tunbridge was well back in the field most oE the way, but he put in some good work towards the close, and was practically up with Dainty Ways at the post. Arrowzone was the leader to the straight,, but he weakened into sixth position. Spearopa was always near the leaders, and finished a good fifth. Kiriana went well to the straight, but then faded out of the picture. Arrowhead was also prominent for part of the journey. Jayson recovered a lot of ground over the concluding stages, and the way he finished suggests that he will trouble the best of them when he becomes more tractable at the start of his races.
