ACMIL'S GOOD PRICE
FIRST-DAY FORM FORGOTTEN
Acmil, a decidedly unlucky horse, on the opening day, was allowed to go out at a royal price in the Kiritahi Handicap, and she won after putting in a brilliant run on the outside from the back of the field down the straight. This three-year-old filly, by Acre from the California mare Millenary, is in great form at present, and she should not be long in leaving hack ranks if she continues to make the progress she has in recent weeks.
After one false start, the field was let away piecemeal, H.'Wiggins running into a flying getaway on Mahora, and quickly putting a four lengths' break on Money Mint, San Quex, Crash, Pakitere, and Pass On. San Quex was squeezed back on the turn, and Mahora, Money Mint, and Pakitere, in line out from the rail, led San Quex, Pass On, and Statuary into the straight. Statuary challenged outside the distance, and had command some chains from the post, but Acmil finished with a great run from the back to beat him home by half a neck, Pass On being a length and a half further back third, and Mahora, King Hal, San Quex, and Pa-kitere next. > Pakitere was a much better favourite than Mahora, with San Quex and Arajean next in demand. The winner was sixth fancy at a surprisingly good price, being a few pounds less backed than Statuary. The breakaway that Mahora obtained at the start led to several of the horses being rushed along early, and the riders of Pakitere and San Quex were two of those who fell into this error, their mounts being run off their feet before the race was three parts over. San Quex, in addition, suffered some interference. Mahora had every chance,, but the pace he set early could not have helped' him. Statuary, who was passed in for seventy guineas at the dispersal sale of Mr. W. H. Gaisford's horses in the morning, put in some good work in the straight, but he probably released his effort just a few moments too soon. Arajean was never sighted.
