A THRILLING FINISH
TWO-YEAR-OLDS' STAR TURN
The , three favourites in the Juvenile Handicap provided -the star finish of the meeting, Esteem, Chief Cook, and Hampden flashing across the line together, and the judge placing them in that order) with half a head and a head respectively between them. Esteem was third, behind Chief Cook and Hampden, into the straight, but Gray brought him along with a great run on the outer from the distance, and he literally lifted him to victory in the final stride.
Esteem is the fourth two-year-old of the season to score a second success, the others being La Poupee, Solvent, and Chief Jewel. He is a bay gelding by Pomibal from that fine imported brood mare ! Eulogy, who has given the Dominion already such valuable racehorses and brood mares as Humbug, Commendation, Pennon, Epitaph, Homage, Eulogy, and Praise. He was purchased by Mr. W. H. Gaisford at the last Trentham sales for 575 guineas, and was not offered by him at his dispersal sale yesterday. The pity seems to be that he has been gelded-, for he is a fine type of horse. To ride him, Gray had to saddle l%lb overweight.
The best of the others in the race were All Humbug, Psychologist, Teller, AVhite Squall, and Beacon Fire, who finished in that order behind the placed horses after being practically in those positions throughout, but. they were a long way back at the end. St. Roger, who was the only one besides the placed horses to carry strong support, reared up at the start and took no part in the race.
