Beverage, who had decisively beaten everything except the high-priced Appledore in the maiden race on the first dny, was made a warm favourite for the Novice Stakes, and he never gave his backers much cause for concern. Gray kept him going nicely in third position behind Blacksmith, and Chief Savage to the straight, andrthen when he released: his run he quickly gathered,in the leaders and came 3n to win'in convincing fashion by a length from the little-fancied Brambletorn. Beverage is a three-year-old bay gelding by Tea Tray from Hosita, a mare by Martian from the imported Favoritf (by Marajax). He was bred tit the Elderslie stud and was sent across to the Sydney sales last year, being purchased by Mr. A. J. Toxward, his pre66nt owner, for 270 guineas. the second horse, Brambletorn, who irefoirned over four times the price the winner paid, worked up into position approaching the straight, and finished strongly on the outside, to beat Chief Savage by a head. the colours of Mr. J. Allison, and is trained at Hastings by P. Smith. Chief Savage, who has had only two races, is on the improve, and so is Blacksmith, who was close up fourth after leading most of the way. Flute,- Kalmuk, Mon Koi, Gueress, and Braggart did best of the others., Kalmuk is the Australianbred three-year-old brown gelding by Caravel from the Martian marc Martuk, who cost the late Mr. O. Elgar 950 guineas as a yearling at the Sydney sales eighteen months ago, and he should be improved by the two races he has had this week. Queen's Salute was badly left at the start.
