Easterly, who missed the race for the iurdles on the first day owing to the horse float in which she was being conveyed to the course breaking down, was « good thing.nearly beaten in the .Papa-. tawa Hurdles :Handicap. She led into; the straight from Kaokaoroa and Evening Hero,, bufc ran right across the last i'ence .and must, have. lost half a dozen lengths, Evening Hero, rushing to the front and looking to have the race in his keeping till Easterly, straightened up, came with a dazzling run wide out and snatched victory back by a neck in the last few strides. Easterly, who is a four-year-old brown mare by Acre from the San Fran mare Sanscvieria, has now won three* races in succession, two being hurdles, and she is likely to go much further in the jumping department.

Evening Hero improved on his first day's effort. He drifted ovi ■ the early stages of the race, but made up ground along the back, and executed a fast run below the last hurdles as he did-on the first day, but, although he stuck on better, he could not hold off the winner, who iB a class above anything she was meeting. The others in the field were <tf^U beaten, the third horse, Kaokaoroa, jiflio failed over the last furlong, being t-bree lengths away, and the fourth horse, Mining Armour, being even a bigger margin further back.
