APPLEDORE'S FIRST

WINS IN INFERIOR COMPANY

Appledore, who cost the late Mr. C; Hlgar 1600 guineas as a yearling in Sydney" about 18 months ago, -won his first race in the Trial Plate, in company much inferior to what he has been tackling lately. He did not move away too well, but he was up about fifth as they uwung into the straight, and although Beverage offered him some fight to the distance he then drew away under punishment and came on to a ratheiyfeisy length and a half victory. Appledore is a fine-looking three-year-old black gelding by Kossendftle from Demeter, an Irish-bred mare, by Desmond, imported to New South Wales in 1923 by the Messrs. Brien. He appeared to be improving in his races at Kiccarton, and it is likely that he will go. on the right Tvay from now. i Beverage, a ibreexyear-old bay gelding by I Tea Tray from. tralT Martian mare Ronita, who iras second, was much the best of ihe rest «£ tte field, lot lie was four

lengths ahead' of tbe third horse, Joic do Yal, at the poet. Jadarino and Viaduct, who were among the smartest away, led him, Joie de Val, Appledore, Enter, Elizabeth, and Brambletora to the straight, but he and Appledore then drew out and had the rest of the race practically to themselves. Elizabeth was a poor fourth, and Viaduct, Enter, Blacksmith, and Bramblotorn were next. . ■ Appledore whs practically twice as well backed as Beverage, with .Joic de Val and Blacksmith in considerably less -demand. Nothing else was wanted. Brambletorn got on to the heels of another horse at the straight entrance and almost came down. Several of the field were inclined 'to hang1 out? at this point, and there was a lot of jostling among the rear division.
