ROYAL FLIER EASILY
SURPRISE WIN IN HI3RDLES
The little-fancied Royal Filler, having his first essay at the fences, brought ofi" », big surprise in the Manga-aiua Hurdles Handicap, winning. decisively, and paying good double figures. He was aix horses back at the turn $j»r home, with Evening Hero, Gueress, Kaokaoroa, Mountain Heath, and Shining Armour all %head of him, but once over the final fence hoj unfurled a powerful run, and, taking charge at the half-distance, came on to win by a length and a half from Mountain Heath, There was no fluke about tie victory, for lie had much too much pace for anything «Jse over1 the last couple of ftirlongs. Roy^l Flier is a four-j«ax-old brown gelding by Flying King from the St. Am&nt mare Amandine, and he was imported from Australia in 1928 by Mr. W. H. Gaisford, whose colours he y^as carrying. He had shown promise on the flat lately, but had failed to fill a pJace in any of his races. He was to have been sold by auction this morning. Mountain Heath was about the middle of the field most of the way, but he finished more strongly than the pacemaking Evening Hero and Gueress, and beat the latter home by half a length. ..Evening Hero was a fair, fourth, after ' having Jooked the probable winner i crossing the final fence. Both he and Gueress will improve. Kaokaoroa made a promising move half a mile from home, but lie mfide a bad jump at the final fence, and he was sixth at the end. Ccill Again and Shining Armour were better favourites than Mountain Heath, Evening Hero, and Kaokaoroa, with everything else at a good price. Call Again tailed the field early, and was never a possibility. Shining Armour improved along the back, but had expended his effort by the time the last fence was leached. Black Acre went well for a mile, and may improve with experience. T?oi de Aral and Half Acre were also prominent for a. space, but were beaten a long way before the end. Easterly failed to arrive at the course in time owing to the float in which she was journeying from Foxton breaking down eft route, and she had to be withdrawn from the ■race at the last minute.
