QUITE FAR ENOUGH

ARAJEAN JUST GETS THERE

Arajean, the half-sister by Arausio to Arrow Lad, reached the post just in time in- the Mako Mako Hack Handicap, but her win was on the merits, for she was. made to cover a lot of extra ground over the. early part of the race and never had a moment's let-up throughout. More judiciously handled, she might well have won; in'more convincing fashion, and her game effort marks her as one likely to show up in better company before the season .closes. ....-. .: - " .--..•

Quinola, Lady Rene, Evening Hero, Arajean, and-Dancing Star were showing out whqn the field settled down, but Arajean ran round; the leaders and was .on terms with Quin'ola as they turned for home, with Lady Rene, Royal King, and' Tea Queen nearest of ithe others. Lady Rene lodged a claim at the distance, but Arajean kept her at bay, and .had just enough gallop left in her to withstand a determined late challeDge from Projection by half a head. Lady Rene was a head further away, with Quinola a poor fourth. Dancing. Star, Statuary, and Royal King were next. ■ ,

Projection was a little better fancied than Lady Rene, -with Arajean and Tea Queen claiming most attention of the others. Projection was seven or eight horses back as they, swung into, the sjiort straight, but he finished with, a great run through the field, and would have -won in 'another stride. Lady Rene was steadied when in a good position early, and >tbe expectation that she would run over her opponents at the end was not to be fulfilled. However, she was not disgraced. Tea. Queen was well .enough placed three furlongs from the post to win, but she failed to come on. Quinola has a lot of speed, and should improve with the race. . .
