NIGHTMARE IS FAST

FILLY WITH GOOD PEDIGREE

The well-bred Nightmare treated the field in the Weraroa Hack Handicap with the utmost. disdain, and came home the easiest winner of the day. She had been unlucky at Otaki, where she rjm third to Cluny and Projection, but she made no mistakes here and scored much more decisively than is usual in hack races. She is a three-year-old bay filly with a nicely balanced pedigree, being by Shambles from the, English-bred Skyrocket mare Sky dream, and, as she obtains winning blood from both sides of her lineage, it will not surprise if she, turns out a- very useful performer for her owner,-the Palmerston, North sportsman Mr. L. H. Collinson. She is trained at Marton by J. T. Morris, and has not had much racing'yet. King Acre jumped out smartly from the rail position at the start of the race, and quickly had a break on Okapua, Bonacre, Nightmare, Desert Lad, and Pimple. Nightmare ran up to second at the halfmile, and Some Acre improved a little further on, while Okapua drifted back into his field, and Royal Flyer was noticed making a run wide out. King Acre was clear of Nightmare and Some Acre at the straight entrance, but there lie lugged out and took Some Acre with him, letting Nightmare come through along the rail and win very easily by four lengths, from him and Some Acre, whom the judge could not separate for second money.. Auckland Gas: showed phenomenal speed' in a burst through the field in the straight, and although he failed to get up for a stake he would have been easy second in another stride. Bonacre, Desert Lad, Royal Flyer, and Fallow were next.

Nightmare was supported with great confidence, King Acre and Braggart being the only others at iany call. Some Acre was one of the outsiders of the field. King Acre gained a big advantage at the start, but he was not .good enough to hold on to it. Even had he not lugged out, Nightmare would have beaten him nearly as easily as she did. However, it was only his second race for some time, and he is likely to improve. Braggart was squeezed out at the start, and was never afterwards sighted. Some Acre went a good race, and with King Acre helped to maintain Acre's good record at the meeting. Auckland Gas was responsible for an amazingly fast finishing run, and he was unlucky not to be second. This Australian-bred son of Air Balloon was purchased by .his owner-trainer (H. Brown) in Sydney last June, and he promifes to return the 50 guineas that was paid:for him'before he has had hany more races...; , . ... .... ..
