SUITED BY DISTANCE

ARROWHEAD'S 'GOOD EFFORT

Arrowhead, who now carries the colours of Mr. F. R. Waller, ■ of. Aurora Borealis fame, notched his first win for his new' owner when he led home the Lake Hack Handicap field and paid a good double-figure dividend. He was hard pressed by Dainty Ways down the straight, but, in spite of the fact that he was attempting a distance beyond what he has been accustomed to, he stuck out with surprising grit and held his challenger at bay to the close. He was bought by Mr. Waller for 100 guineas after the last Dannevirke meeting in August, and his win practically repays that outlay. .

Playground and Arrowhead were the first out from Kiriana and Dainty Ways, but the last-named had gone back a couple of places as they turned into the back. Gray then brought her off the rail, and she ran up on the outside to pass the failing Playground and to lie just behind Arrowhead at the straight entrance, with Kilorell and Kiriana handiest of the others. Dainty Ways challenged from the distance, but she could not catch the leader, who won with half a neck to spare. . Kiriana. was two lengths further . away, with Kilorell and. Spearform almost in line. Next to finish were Fallow "and Merry Melody.

Playground was all the rage on the machine, with Dainty Ways only a little more than' half as well supported. Robbie's Mistake was" a poor third favourite. Playground, who has usually finished very strongly, closed up quickly, when business started, and his poor showing is not easy to understand. Dainty Ways had everything except the winner well beaten, and had she not lost her place early and then had to come outside the field she might well have won. Robbie's Mistake was never sighted, but Kiriana was always going well and will be improved, by the race. Kilorell and Spearform,

who was having her second start, finished strongly, and are evidently coming into form.
