EAST FOE EASTERLY

GOOD WIN INIIIGHWEIGHT

Easterly made the third success in three heats for Acre when she won the Manakau Higinyeight Handicap, somewhat unexpectedly, at least so far as..the general public was concerned. She was not.conspicuous in the early running,, but she made a strong effort on the outside from the half-mile, and cut the leaders down one after the other in the short straight. She is. a four-year-old bay mare by. Acre from the San Fran mare Sanscvieria, dam also of fe'iigarbng, who showed pace on thf> track at A'.vapuiii before an injury compelled her retirement to the stud. She is

owned by the Palmerston North sportsman, Mr. T. F. Relling, and is trained at Foxton by F. J. Carmont. Callamart, Reflecto, Spearform, and Adventus were the early leaders, with-Auc-tioneer and Easterly last, but Auctioneer made a run at the five furlongs and was just behind Callamart and Spearform at the three furlongs. Callamart, Spearform, and Auctioneer were practically in line in that order out from the rail entering the straight, with Tunbridge and Easterly nearest of the others. Easterly finished strongly on the outer and beat Auctioneer by half a length, with Tuubridge two lengths further away third, in front ■of Callamart and Spearform. Tunbridge and Auctioneer were much the best fancied on the machine, with a drop to Spearopa and Callamart. Tunbridge finished disappointingly after having every- chance, but Auctioneer was easily second best in the race, and should improve with the run. None of . the others were in the least impressive. Spearopa,'in particular, was again a stark failure, and there can be little doubt that he is proving a severe trial for his connections.
