TWO ACRE WINNERS

divisions m maiden: r/ce

The ■winner of each' section of the Maiden Race was sired' by; Acre, Acco scoring in the jast stride: from Joie de; Val in the first division, and. Rothen'doing best over the final part of the second. division to notch a rather more decisive victory. The success of Acco was not- widely anticipated, and she-paid a good double-figure dividend, but Rotheivwho has been working well on the tracks lately, was. at about only a quarter of her price. In the first division Aceo, Tar Baby, Dick .Whittington, Joie de Val, Enter, and Mythology were the first out, but Joie. de Val fan up on the outside and took over at the three furlongs. !. Acco .was. not-going to let her have, her own way, however, and "was practically on terms ;at the straight entrance, with ; Tar ...Baby and .Mythology closest of the others. , Joie de Val appeared to have victory in" lier keeping fifty yards from the post, but she stopped in the last few strides, arid Acco beat her home by half ir head, with Saltpot coming from well' back into third place two ' lengths further awajv; 'Mythology was close up fourth, and next were Tar Baby, Gueress, and-'Enter. Little ■Thrush was left at the start. "In the second .division Valrewa shot out at the dispatch ahead of Rothen, Attar, Sing Hal, and Gold Sand, but she went back into, her fi'elil■ before a furlong had .been traversed, and Attar .took over from Gold- Sand and'Rothen. Attar and; Gold Sand were practically on terms entering the straight from Rothen, Seneschal, and Hinewai, but Rothen came through at the .distance and quickly mastered the leaders to win by a good neck from Gold Sand, vsjio was half a length better thau Seneschal, with Attar and Hinewai right up. Tar Baby was a somewhat, better favourite than Joie de Val; with Rothen and Aralrewa the only others much wanted. Joie.de Val should have won her division. H. Gray appeared to throw the race away by dropping his hands a moment too'soon, whereupoti the mare stopped so quickly that. Acco, kept up to the bit by R. Reed, passed her again in practically the final stride. . Reed thus had his revenge_ for his defeat a. week earlier in . the Night-march-Cylinder battle. Tar .Baby had every chance. Valrewa never .recovered from her early check, but Saltpot and Hinewai showed a lot. of .speed over the concluding part of the race, and are worth remembering for nearby engagements.
