MR. C. H. HOWORTH'S ART

A small but very pleasing collection of paintings is on view at present in M'Gregor Wright's Studio, Lambton quay. These are the work of Mr. C. H. Howorth, and through their medium Mr. Howorth proves that he can wield a brush with facility, fidelity, and distinctive charm. Landscape subjects are apparently Mr. Howorth's forte, and some of his best efforts depict New Zealand scenes which arrest and hold the attention. A particularly beautiful view has in the left foreground one of those moss arid fern-covered tree trunks which are so characteristic of New Zealand's bush, and the rarified air of towering mountain peaks and the wet greenness of the bush is cleverly evoked in several other pictures. Then there are glimpses of rural Devon and Cornwall, two counties which artists rarely miss in England, and thos.e who like to see the vivid colourings of the Mediterranean will appreciate such peeps as that which shows the huddled little houses above the Gulf of Salerno, Scotland, and London City have also found a discerning student in Mr. Howorth, and this variety of locale gives an added charm to his all too small exhibition. Lovers of sincere and faithful endeavour in water colours and oils should; find much that is refreshing in Mr. Howorth's work.
