HEALTH AND EDUCATION
(To the Editor.) / Sir,—ln connection with the recent... School Committee elections, it. appears that householders "throughout the Wellington district were unanimous in their opinion that the niggardly manner- iji which these committees are being treated by the Education Board called for some ■drastic alteration in the present system, of capitation. .It was disclosed at the ■ meeting of householders that,l attended that it was neeessary> for the members.of the coui-mittoe-to,:make a.personal canvas of the district in order to augment the funds " at its disposal to enable repair work to the school to be carried out. That suck a state of affairs should exist in this country calls for an early and thorough, overhaul of. the whole system, and is, in, my opinion, a disgrace to the Government. The health of our children is - v threatened and their progress ' retarded by the stinting policy, of the Government, and I have no hesitation in stating that such a state of affairs should not be tolerated. Royal Commissions hai-e beea set up for far more trivial things. . If it is doubted that'children's health, is being menaced, a visit to Miramar South School will reveal that young children are compelled to sit for hours ia a classroom with windows that would disgrace a barn, aud with the winter in' front of us the health of the. children.1 and teachers'concerned will surely suffery if not remedied. SchooJ committees have a. thauklesa task, and as matters are at present it i^, only the welfare and concern for the chilV dren that encourages them to carry on! under very trying circumstances. Let tbej Minister of Education see to it thafc ; sufficient money is placed at the disposal of school committees to enable them to i carry out their. duties to , the efficiently and without stint. Our cbil» dren's health and education should b^ the first consideration of the Govern* ment, and if sufficient money is not afi present at the disposal of the Minister of Education to enable him to do justice to the children, he should demand more o$ ' resign.—I am,' etc., .' . .
