FAST HALF-MILE
A half-mile from scratch in the fael
time of lmin SBsec was the performance with which L. Hack, of Masterton, was credited at a sports meeting held. by
lie 'Masterton Club last evening. Hack's
time is 1 4-ssec outside the Australian and New Zealand record registered by the American L. Hahn at Hawera, in 102G, and it is an improvement of. onefifth of a second on the time recorded by H. G. Burk (Otago) in 1905 and A. W. Dormer in 1912, and recognised officially as the best performance by.a New Zealander' over ' the. distance. ,-'
In the 880ydst event last evening,' Hack I conceded starts up to 00yds, but he ran an excellent race, showing splendid judgment. He caught the bunch along the back straight in the second lap, and, sprinting strongly, overhauled Devine, who had a good lead,, and won amidst applause. Hack competed at the.Basin B.e r sterve against Dr; Peltze'r oh Bth February in the 880 yds short limit invitation race, in which, from the Isyds mark, he was placed third. . '. Another feature of last evening's meeting was some fine riding by T. Oakley in the cycle eventß. Oakley won the one mile, one and a half piles, and two miles events in moat. convincing fashion.
