COMPROMISE SCHEME
TASK OF ADJUSTMENT
Brttisb CfflcUl Wlreleii. ; (Received 18th February, 11 a.m.)
RUGBY,"I7th February.
It is expected that, although M. Tardieu, who is suffering from a slight attack of influenza and laryngitis, will be unable to return to London until later iii the week, the heads of- the delegations, with M. Briand representing France, will resume to-morrow their discussions regarding the figures which have been framed in the memoranda of the different delegations. : Tho position now is that the experts have evolved a scheme whereby the global and category' methods of ascertaining and limiting the naval tonnage figures are co-ordinated and that into this framework the actual tonnago figures havo to be inserted. Sets of figures put forward on 'behalf of the different Powers offer a basis for'discussion by the delegation chiefs, and are in tho uaturo of things largejy provisional, sinco tho requirements claimed by one Power mny havo a repercussion upon requirements'! claimed 'by another Power. The task of adjustment is important and delicate and may conceivably take sonic time, but so far it has proceeded quite amicably. Meanwhile the experts to-day resumed tlieir study of special ships, such as training vessels, seaplane carriers as distinct from aircraft carriers and other minor varieties of tonnage, their problem being to decide whether future displacements of such tonnage should be included in categories or in the so-called exempt class. ■ Leaders of the British, American, and Japanese delegation also met this afternoon. l '..'.'■
