HOUSE SURGEONS
SHORTAGE WILL BE OVERCOME , (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day. Although the Medical School of thai Otago University will be unable for the next two years to supply a sufficient number of graduates to meet the de- ■ inand for house surgeons in the Dominion, the Dean of the Faculty (Sir Lindo Ferguson) hopes that by the end of 1933 the difficulty will havo been surmounted. The present tendency is in favour of increased classes,1 he states in his annual report, and he thinks that it is probable that the movement will continue for some- years. . During the year a very important step was taken in the establishment of a loan fund for students who were in financial difficulties in the latter stages of their careers. The fund was raised owing to the generosity of a few pub- \ Jic-spirited citizens and amounts to ' £2000, on which it is hoped a Government subsidy will be- granted, but in. the meantime this question is in abeyance. The fund, as it stands, will only ha,ve an income of £100 a year for loan purposes. If the Government subsidy, is granted and this income is doubled, it will serve a very useful purpose. In any case the fact remains that, owing to private generosity, a fund has been established, and it will in time grow to such a figure as to make it a most valuable asset to the school. The need for young dental practitioners in country districts is stressed in, the report of the Dentistry Faculty. The view is also expressed that the Dental School should easily meet the demands of the Dominion for man* years: .
