CHRISTCHURCH SCHEME NATIONAL CONFERENCE URGED (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") GHEISTCHUKOH, 12th February. For the purpose of considering tha possibility of devising ways and means of dealing with tho unemployment situation in Christehurch, a largely-attended conference of representatives of public bodies and institutions was held in tho City Council Chamber. The Mayor (f : Key. J. K. Archer), who convened the conference 'as a result of representations ' made to him, occupied the chair. After the subject had been discussed, the following resolution, proposed by Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., wa3 carried unanimously: "That this conference- representing1 public (bodies and institutions, called in accordance with tho suggestions thrown out by the- retiring GovernorGeneral, Sir Charles Fergusson, to consider the subject of unemployment, re--solves as follows: "(1) That the problem should receive the immediate and continuous attention of the Government, local bodies, and citizens generally. " (2) That the Government be recommended to consider the' advisability of initiating a great permanent roading scheme to be financed by using the proceeds of the petrol tax and other available funds for the purpose of paying interest and sinking fund on the. loans necessary for the carrying out of tho scheme. "(3) That tliis conference resolves itself into a committee to further the effort to iind work and relieve distress, an executive of twelve to be appointed." The following recommendation was held over pending the publication of the report of tho special committee set up by the Government to consider the question of unemployment: "That the Government be advised to give effect to Sir Charles Fergusson's suggestion and call a special national conference representative of the various community interests to consider tha problem in its national aspects."
