While some of the great Sydney and Melbourne retail softgoods houses report good to excellent-turnovers and increased net profits this year, this experience is not general m the trade. Mr. R. M. Clark in moving the adoption of the annual re^ port and balance-sheet at the sixth ordinary general meeting of shareholders of Marcus Clark (Victoria), Ltd., last week spoke of the difficulty the company had experienced m maintaining turnover, especially as almost every customer was imbued with a spirit of, economy and purchased goods somewhat lower in price than usual. The records of Craig Williamson Pty., Ltd., showed that each customer spent about 8 p_er cent, less each month than for the corresponding month last year. "We still believe," said Mr. Clark, "that with a return to better conditions in Victoria and South Australia we shall prosper. We regret that we cannot pay a dividend on the ordinary shares."
