ARTIFICIAL BUTTER PRICES.
Although it is reported that there is a depression in the London butter market, Melbourne merchants do not consider that there will be.'any consequent weakness in their local market, which was reported on 7th December; as "in a sound position." Tinners are operating freely. About three-quarters of the total amount of butter being produced is being exported to London. If there is no sudden occurrence of hot weather it is probable that the "peak" period will continue for about three weeks or even a month. Melbourne prices were: Choicest Victorian butter Is SV»d a lb, or 191s M a cwt; first grade, about ISSs; and secondary grade down to 177s 4d a cwt. Simultaneously, London prices for Australian butter, freight, in. Giirance, and all charges paid, were 162s to 164s per .cwt. The difference between the price of Australian butter in Melbourne and Australian butter in London of 27s to 28s per cwt, not counting transport to London and incidental" charges, is explained by ,the operation of the l'aterson scheme by which, Australian consumers are called upon to1 enable Australian producers to sell cheap in the overseas market and dear in their own domestic market imports from New gealand are now barred by a duty of 6d per lb.
