AWAPUNI TRACK NOTES

PREPARING FOR WOODVILLE

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.") : ; PALMERSTON N., This Day. were fair on Saturday morning at Awapuni for the early workers, the course proper, which was open, to fast workers, being slow without being too soft, but a heavy fall later left the tracks flooded for those who made their appearance after breakfast.- All the fast work was carried out on the extreme outside of

the course proper.

. This centre supplies three candidates for the hurdle race at Woodville in Air Force, Aur6ra Borealis, and Viuella. Of the trio, Aurora Borealis was the only one asked to jump on Saturday •- morning, M. H. Nieoll, who will ride her at AVondale, sending her over a round of the battens. The Day Comet mare, who has done the major portion of her work on the roads of late, gave a clean exhibition. She might, however, require a race or two.

iVinella (T, Green) had Democratic (R. Reed) aa a companion in a task over seven furlongs,' the pair running the distance . attractively in lmin 38sec after leaving-the first three furlongs beh-ind in 39sec. ...-Democratic' is down to compete over the battens on the second day of the Woodville Meeting prior to going on to Hawera for the Solan Cup.

Air Force (A. M'Donald) and Streamer (Bromley) were among the after-break-fast string, and they required lmin 30sec to negotiate the six furlongs after leaving the first three behind in 43see. Streamer had the better of the argument, and should prove .more than useful over the battens later on; ,

W. L; Russell, who was at one time attached to G. New's stable in the capacity of head._ lad, ; has taken over Mr. C. T. Keeble's string from G. New, and Blimp, Great Lady, Jason, etc., have been trans? ferred' to Woodville, where Russell has secured the premises, originally occupied by T. Lloyd. With the present track conditions prevailing, onthe day, it would not be surprising to find Blimp signal his transfer auspiciously, for the Gasbag gelding is very well and should revel in the heavy going. He has been somewhat of a disappointment of late, but with conditions to his liking he should break his run of outs.

Otairi (Reed) and Imperial Spark (K. Voitre) ran a mile on the outside 'o£ the grass proper in lmin 52 3-ssec, the former, however, appearing to hold the advantage at the finishing post. Mister Gamp (Green) was picked up at the six-furlong post, but the chestnut, who has not been up long; cried .enough before the straight was ;rieached. Otairi may figure in the Gothard .Memorial on the second day at Woddville. ...- ,'■'. v . ■ -.- :

v.Bt^e'-Eaper:;,^.; M'p.pnaiay^.an'^.War--" zpnoy (Te';-: Tliamefa), wheT galloped when the .fiipk^were at their worst, ran six fur--3o)igiG.-iK-Imm: -27 2-ssec.' Blue; Paper is' rapidly*■coming-, back to*J proper * concert pitch;';rahd Christmas time should find the Papei,*' Money: filly -giving -of her best. Warione, while she looks well, has proved a little-tricky of late, and she 'may be accorded a spell in the near future. '.'

Good^cre (Reed), who made.a' very ;

fair;: showing at,his first essay with the eolo'virsup at Levin, will contest the Man-, gara^ya Hack Handicap at Wpodville. In compaiiy with tlife Trial Plate candidate Callamart . (T; Taylor), Good Acre ran six furlongs in lmin 24 2-osec when the going was comparatively good. The' outings; should do both good. ■ ■; ■ ■ „

A. Quinlivaa's pair, Masher (Reed) and Par! (Eager), w,ere accompanied by Keddar/(Green) in a seven-furlong gallop, in which Masher and Keddar were together at the finish in lmin 39 2-ss'ee. The trip were together at ths end of half a mile which" was left behind in 56 3-ssec, but thereafter Parl commenced to> drift, not finding the going to his Hiring. Hasher figures in the Whairiti Handicap oit Wednesday while Parl is down to contest, the Mangarawa Hack Handicap.

Princess Betty and Nimble will represent the local stables in tlie "Nursery Handicap on the opening day at Woodville, Gesture, a stable companion of the latter, having been withdrawn, although she will come in on the second day. Her owner, Mr. A. Symes, will have Salon to carry his colours in addition to Nimble, the former being, however, from O. Cos's Hawera stable. After breakfast on Saturday morning Gesture, who had the worst of the weights, led Nimble at the end of1 three furlongs run in 41sec. The latter is nevertheless showing steady improvement. Princess Betty has been doing all

that has been asked of her of late. Like her companion, Tigrano, she was worked very early. . Rioghail has been allowed to forego his first day's engagement at Woodville, but the Grandcourt youngster may come in for the Novice Plate on Thursday, wherein Black Acre is another ■■ local entrant. Rioghail ; (Jl'Dowell) and Myola (K. Voitre) ran the last three furlongs of a five-furlong task on Saturday morning in 43sec without being impressive. Moutoa Treasury, who was nominated for the Borough Handicap on the opening day at'Woodville, will not start till the second'day, when she wfll: have the option .of- starting in. the Gothard Memorial or the' Gorge Handicap, No doubt the Paper Honey mare will be a candidate in the latter event, in which she will be ridden by R. Reed. On- Saturday -morning, with Reed in the saddle, she ran five furlongs alone in lmin 7 2-ssec, after doing the first two furlongs,in 27sec. „-,.' Fiery Comet was to have made his reappearance on the race tracks.in the Whairiti Handicap on the opening day at Woodville, but a sore'mouth' has decided his trainer to forego the first day's engagement at least. Disrank is another local who will not come in till the second day. With J. Pagan in the saddle, Fiery Comet strode along over seven furlongs in lmin 45see on Saturday morning. GENERAL.

The Nassau gelding from G-. Jones's stable showed promise in a sprint with Disrank on Saturday morning by leading the latter performer home at the end of a half-mile sprint in 54sec. Roundelay, who will not be asked to race until the Christmas fixtures come round, showed that' he is in very fair order by leaving five furlongs behind him in lmin-Baec on Saturday morning. J. P. Coyle will not be represented at

Woodville, but lie will take King Acre, Skyrider, and ,Novar through to the Egmont Meeting. On Saturday morning Gleurossie (Reed) led King Acre (Green) home at the end o£ a five-furlong task, the last three furlongs occupying 41sec.

Adventus, who was operated ou some little time back, is being pottered about on the tracks, but the Bisogne gelding will "not be asked to' race' till after Christmas, it being the intention of his owner to give him plenty of time to recover from the operation.

The Laekham—llooiulme filly from W. Bailey's stable will be given an outing in public on the second day at Woodville, and in preparation she was given barrier practice on Saturday morning. Sporting Chance, from the same stable, will probably make his next appearance at JUanawatu. This attractive-looking sort completed his task on Saturday by sprinting home the last two furlongs in 26sec. Skyrider and a Sarto gelding from J. P. Coyle's stable were companions in a gallop on the grass on Saturday morning. The latter, who claims relationship with Vinella, revelled in the going, the sis furlongs being negotiated in lmin 28sec.

Rouex is the latest recruit to the jumping branch, and when put over the battens by A. E. Stratton on Saturday morning the Kilbroney gelding shaped quite promisingly. Askari was likewise jumped by R. G. Stratton, but;this;young horseman had a very safe conveyance.

Those two veterans, March On and Birkie, have been once again put into work by their owner, Mr. S. Havill. The former, who must be about 14 years old, looks in surprisingly good order, despite his lengthy spell o£ idleness. G. Jones has a newcomer to his stable in Battle Torque, a five-year-old mare by Martian—Torquato/. Mr. W. H. Gaisford having purchased her from Mr. 0. S. Watkins, of Wellington. Although she has failed in her racing to date, she might give good service as a brood mare. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements have been announced, where Palmerston North horses and horsemen are concerned, for the Woodville Meeting:— A. H. Burt.—Delude. C. Robinson.—Vinella. A. M'Donald.—Air Force. B. H. Morris.—Princess Betty. . W. Broughton.—Gold Bag, Cuticle. R., J. Mackie.—Royal Opera. K. Voitre.—lmperial Spark, Brown Sugar.-' T. Murray, who injured the sinews of his right hand in the same upset, will likewise be out of the. game till the holiday season.
