WILTON ROAD TIP

A HARBOUR FOR RATS

From the time the gully in "Wilton road was first used as a "tip" for refuse "of all .kinds/.: the "executive: of the.jNorthland -Progressive 'Association h as' been much - concerned over the' probability of the place becoming a harbour and breeding ground for rats, and consequently a menace to the health of the community. The association has repeatedly drawn the attention of the civic. authorities to the danger, and at the suggestion qf the executive,- the .City. Council partiy fenced the: area and provided gates which are kept locked. A notice is placed on the site forbidding the depositing of refuse without nrst obtaining the key of the gate ami having the load inspected. Unfortunately the fence along the side of the gully only runs for a short- distance, and it is quite easy for ..vehicles to go round the end of it.and deposit rubbish without let or hindrance. The-result, officers of the association assert* is that all manner of objectionable refuse has been dumped in the gully, and the association's fears have been only too well realised, for the tip has now become- infested with rats, which appear to be breeding rapidly.,..- AVhen there is nothing left for the vermin to feed on they invade the houses of residents in the vicinity. The danger to the health of the community can be easily realised. Early in the present week, some person, presumably a baker, dumped upwards of two hundred loaves of bread into the tip, and the rats may be- seen at any time feeding on the loaves. Complaints to this effect weremade by members at last night's meeting of the association, and the opinion expressed that action should be taken against the person responsible, who should be compelled to remove the bread to the destructor. It was also contended that if the City Council allows part of a residential area to be used as a rubbish tip, it should see that a sufficient quantity of ipoil ia deposited from time to time to completely cover up the deposits of refuse. In view of the council's intention of creating a dump for refuse at Chaytor street, the association says residents of this area should profit by Northland's experience, and see that proper safeguards are made to obviate a repetition of the- undesirable state of affairs existing in Wilton road. -
