AT TAKAPUNA

ALISON CUP TO PRODICE

LEITRIM WESTS TAKAPUNA

PLATE

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "Tho Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, ,30th November. Most of the races at Takapuna to-day were rather easily won, although there were close finishes in the Takapuna Plate, Cambria Handicap, and the Ponui. Handicap. Several favourites were successful, and nearly all the winners were well backed. MAIDEN STAKES. Although Kairuri and Tremetus were at good prices Clopton was a slightly better favourite than Sea Song for the Melrose Maiden Stakes, with Alloy also heavily backed. Loving Cup and Nell received the best of the start, but Sea Song soon took charge. Sea Song drew out throe furlongs from home and turned iuto the straight clear of' Loving Cup, Taku, and Nassau Lady. Nothing had a chance with Sea Song at the finish and she won very easily by four lengths from Nassau Lady, who beat Mon Star by three parts of a length. Carlaris was fourth, followed by Nell, Tukii, and Alloy. The winner drew the extreme outside at the barrier, and besides showing plenty of speed also ran on well. Nassau Lady and Mon Star finished fairly, but Loving Cup and Nell tired after having every chance. Alloy was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Kotahi was saddled up and sent to the post, but bled after doing his preliminary, and was withdrawn, the investments on his chance being refunded. ' HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. An outsider in Kairuri effected a big surprise in the Tiri Highweight Handicap, for which. Sir Archie and Golden Wedding were best backed. Waitaunaha led early with Eed Comet, Harbour View, Kairuri and Bizarro well up. The field bunched at the top, where Ulena Bay ran through fast from the rear and Quincoma also moved up. Running to the turn Waitaunaha retired and Kairuri assumed command from Glena Bay, Wenday, Quincoma, bir Archie, and Golden Weddin" Kairuri stayed on well, and scored by two lengths from Wenday, with Glena Bay a length away third. Sir Archie was fourth, succeeded by Golden Wedding and Harbour View.

The -winner is an upstanding gelding by Surveyor, and was making his first public appearance. Sir Archie ran a fair race and will be improved by the run, while Golden Wedding was badly placed most ot the way, and failed to show her true form. Glena Bay made his run from the rear too quickly, otherwise he would have been more troublesome. ... BOROUGH HANDICAP. The Borough Handicap was a decent betting . race with Prince Val and Refresher the best backed. Liaison and Flying Prince received the best of the start, while Refresher lost his rider, arid the outside horses, Royal Doulton and Macroom, lost a. little ground. Liaison, Respirator, and Cynthia N. were prominent early. Running across the top Liaison fell back quickly, and Prince Val joined Cynthia.N. in the lead. Near the turn Prince Val drew out and turned for home clear of Respirator, Flying Prince and Eager Rose. Prince Val was not troubled at the finish, and won easily by five lengths from Flying Prince, who defeated Eager Rose by a length aud a half Kespirator was fourth, followed by Hino Ilmrsby, and Macroom. Prince Val is good, and won most d<i eisively. Macroom and Royal Doulton ran decent races considering they got off so slowly. Eager Rose was a shade unlucky Liaison bled, and was pulled, while the riderless Refresher was always well up, and finished among the placed horses. His rider lost his seat through catching his foot m the stirrup of Flying Prince's saddle. ALISON CUP. Piodiee was a hot favourite for the Alison Cup, being nearly twice as veil backed as In The Shade, who had a slight call"over True Blood. The Lover and Ji lying Juliet carried the field alonntor most of the way, with Prodice (on the rails) and Le Choucas together next, and then True Blood. Three furlongs from homo Le Choucas went up on the outside of the leaders, and shortly afterwards Ply. ing Juliet dropped back. At the turn irodice came to the outside and drew away to win with ease by four lengths from The Lover, who defeated Le Choucas by three parts of a length. True Blood was fourth,, followed by Transformer, In lne bnade, and Covinax. Prodice was always going like a winner, whereas In The Shade was in the rear most of the way, and never gave any trouble. The Lover ran one of his best races and Le Choucas went well, consideung that he bolted once round at a fast pace, after throwing his rider when going down to do his preliminary. b CAMBRIA HANDIBAP. Another outsider in Tremetus turned up m the Cambria Handicap, for wl el Ohipb, and Sight Draft were heav«v backed. Tremetus and Oil King moved first and then Orapai took chaige from Full Measure and Biddy's Boy. g Orap" showed the way into the straight to Full Wild US; X" and Wild Time Orapai looked like winning clow the distance bat Tremetus finished well and beat him by a neck. Wild Time was two engths away third, and Biddy's a^St h>Dr^ COmhlffßellS°£"progeny have been racing well n <Wtraha this season. Sight Draft drew wide out at the start, and was outside several horses most of the way. *><-n.iai TAKAPUNA PLATE. Fifteen started in the Takapuna Plate and Leitrim was favourite at a fair price with Duellona and Vali also weJl backed! Good Boy and Leitrim were first to movo Cnmestor running to the front quickly to lead along the back from Leitrici. Vohmond Vali, Belle Star, and Storm fiend. Ihe field bunched up across the top, Leitrim leading into the straight Uom a bum-li, comprising Bria.r Root, JCetrarchate, Tali, Volimond, and Crimestor. Once they straightened up Vali issued a strong challenge, and in a hot

finish he just failed to reach Leitriin who won by half a head. Briar Root was two and a half lengths away third, aa H letrarchate fourth. Next to finish' were btorin Fiend and Prince of Orange Leitrim and Vali outclassed the others at the finish. 'Vali might have won with a better pist position.- Tetrarchate displayed considerable speed in the middle stages, arid should be worth following Duellona was slow away, and never dangerous. PONUI HANDICAP. For the Pouui Handicap Taurua was an odds-ou favourite, with Sports Kin<v and Brampton moat in demand of the others larrapen and Diamond Queen attended to the pacemaking, with Spring Abbey and Red Lion handily placed. The field bunched at the top, Diamond Queen and Spring Abbey running on in the lead to be first into the straight from Sports King, Gay Cockade, Cybele, and Taurua Spring Abbey had charge inside the distance, ar.d just lasted long enough to beat the fast-finishing Taurua by a short head Cybele was a neck away third and Gay Cockade fourth. Then came Brampton and Diamond Queen. Taurua was a certainty beaten by sheer over-confidence on the part of Goldfinch who delayed his effort until getting into an impossible position at the turn, where he had to conic wide to get a run. SpringAbbey ran his best race to date and Cybelo shaped well enough to indicate that she is returning to form. CHELTENHAM HANDICAP. Heavy wagering on the Cheltenham Handicap saw Lady Quex and Valhir very solidly backed. Lucy Hose and JLown Bird moved first, Town Bird and Ridgemount carrying on the running from lea Time-and Vallar. With three furlongs covered Lady Quex went up fast on the outside, and was the leader into the straight from Town Bird, Ridgemount Vallar, and Lucy Kose. Lady Quex easily held her own in the run home, and won by three lengths from Lucy Rose ■who finished on to beat Town Bird by two. lengths. Ridgemount wa§ fourth and Vallar fifth.

Lady Quex was not too well' placed early, but soon ran through, and was not .seriously troubled once she reached the front Vallar was restrained in behind the leaders early, and this apparently did not suit him, as he failed to come on at the end.. Despite .his failure Vallar is likely to be one of the early fancies for the Railway Handicap. Lucy Rose finished on but few of the others ran anywhere up. to form. , Results :— Melroso Maiden Stakes, of 250 soys • seven turlongs—2 Sea Song, 8.0 (Keesiug), 1; v Nassau Lady, 8.0, 2; 11 lion Star, 8.0, 3.
