AT FEILDING
RABBI WINS AGAIN STAKES AN UNSATISFACTORY RACE \ , (By Telegraph—From "Vedette.") The Feilding Jockey Club left nothing unfinished in the arrangements for. its ■'■ Jubilee Meeting, which opened on Satur-. day. Invitations Bent to prominent racing folk from all parts had a ready response, and the enclosures and stands •were well filled when racing commenced. The vice-president of the Racing Conference, Mr. 0. S. Watkins, of Wellington, : attended in his official capacity. The three gold trophies given to the club to ' go to the owner, trainer, and rider of the ■winner of the Jubilee Ciip by Mr. C. F. Johnston were much' admired, and when : Sir J. J. Corry, R. Alexander, and L. J. ; EJhs,- the people most concerned in . Eabbi's win, received their cups there ■ was enthusiasm not general on race- ' courses. The weather, although dull and threatening, with a keen wind, did not , spoil the gathering, although, a short and : sudden rain squall just prior to the second i race raised some doubts. However, the '. lest of the day was fine enough. The track was inclined to be soft when racing commenced, but dried up rapidly, and provided really ideal going. As would be expected, the totalisator returns showed > a marked increase on those o£ last year ' the figures being £27,258, as against £20,357. ; ' Rabbi kept up his winning way by adding the IPeilding Cup to his already good list of victories this season. The track : was ideal for him, and at no stage over the :lr.st five furlongs was there much ' doubt about his victory. R. Alexander, his trainer, was rather anxious prior to ; the race, because the foot trouble which came against Rabbi at Trentham. had re- ' curred. The gelding went down rather ri>mped in his preliminary, but once 'warmed-Tip in the race, all-was well with ■ him;' Alexander deserves a good deal of ' credit for.the condition in which he has kept' Rabbi despite some difficulties. He also provided another winner for Mri Corry during the day in the equally consistent and much improved Make Up, who ■was also ridden by the Southern jockey, L. J. Ellis. - The race for the Feilding Stakes was quite a diss.ppointment, apart from the fact that it saw the failure o£ the odd?- ' on favourite Paganelli. The result was a typical example of the luck of racing. When the rain came earlier in the week 'the connections of Cimabue were very doubtful about sending him, for hitherto lie has been useless on a soft track. ,His owner did not go to see him run, and so far as those most concerned went, he was unbacked. He was always going well and" finished brilliantly. Paganelli did not show his usual, dash, and when R. S. Bagby-commenced to ride him about a furlong from home he made a poor response. It was then that' L. G. Morris brought Cimabue up on the outside and .cut right across Paganelli. There ■.vas an inquiry into the interference, and it was : decided to censure Morris fo: crossing,'and R. S. Bagby, rider of Pliganelli, was warned for giving unsatisfactory cvi-1 dence. Looking at the incident from the stands, while' the result quite possibly was "unaffected, it appeared a very decided breach. The feature of the Stakes was the speed shown by Kaihoro. Had she been started ill the open sprint event she would have troubled The Raider, who is well served on the small turning courses. •-" The - members of the Press gallery received as souvenirs o£ the meeting racebonk covers neatly inscribed with their names and the mo.iogram o£ the Feilding Jockey Club. This was "an • innovation much appreciated. WAITUNA HURDLES. ■■' Horomea and. Elysianor were the best backed in a decent betting race. Elysianor, Hard Gold, Red Bank, Delude, and Ho-l-oiuea led-to the first feuce, where Delude stumbled. Down the straight Delude and Hard Gold' led Red Bank and Elysianor, 'wltli Horomea handy and the rest weli back! Red Bank and Horomea headed off Hard Gold and Delude at the five furlong post, 'With Elysianor just behind. Elysiajior ran up to the leaders and jumped to the front at the last fence from Horomea and beat her home by a hoad. Hard Gold was four lengths away third with Atareria fourth and Red Bank and Novar riext. Elysianor, ridden by W. Bowdcn, could have won by much more than a head, for lie was being eased up, whereas Horomea was being ridden hard to snatch a chance victory. Hard Gold went a great race, again not over judiciously ridden. Atareria and Novar finished on well after being a .long way back in the early stages. On a drier 'track Novar would have done betted ! Red Bank was beaten by the distance' and should be hard to beat next time otit over a mile and a half. Delude -still needs the racing experience, and should be useful later. AORANGI TRIAL PLATE. False Scent was a very decided odds-on favourite, with Statuary the winner at'a great price. Grand Marnia was slow away and Leisure and Black Acre began best from Pedestal, False Scent, Parl, and Statuary. Statuary moved up going to the turn, where he joined Leisure in the lead, the handiest being Parl and False Scent. Statuary and Leisure drew out in the straight and in a punishing finish Statuary beat Leisure by a head. 'Parl was three lengths away third, with l?our Aces, Lady' Gen, and Grand Marnia well back next, and False Scent struggling .in at the head of the remainder. , ; Statuary finished well, for ho was being ridden for a position three furlongs from home, and then came on too strongly for Leisure. Leisure, a three-year-old filly by" Lord Quex from Spare Moment, ran a great - race for a , newcomer. Her solid ■ backing for a first appearance was a good •Indicator. Purl ran one of Ink usual races and. was not quite good enough. Four Aces, ■Lady .Gen, and Grand M.-trnia went fair races. False Scent, who had been tubed, was.in dire trouble at the turn. The conditions were against him, but lie can be written off now any way. Pedestal, who - looked big, showed some pace. FEILDING JUBILEE CUP. Rabbi was a good favourite, with support for the Vertigcrn-TalisUer bracket and Panther. Shrewd for bccoud, returned a better price than ths winner, Rabbi. Panther, Piuthair, Keddar, and Talisker began the best, but Merry Mint and Teri led down the straight from Panther, Piuthair, Keddar, Talisker, Vertijrern, Rabbi, and Joy Bird. Teri. was out clear from Merry Mint at the five furlong post from Panther, Keddar, Talisker, Rabbi, Piuthair, Joy Bird, Vertigern, and Bright Glow. Rabbi, Bright Glow, Merry Damon, Rua- ■ nui, and. Shrewd moved up smartly racing across the top, where the order was Teri, • Keddar, Rabbi, Panther, Merry Damon, Talisker, and Shrewd. Tcri, Rabbi, Keddar, Ruanui. and Shrewd turned for home practically in line. Shrewd made a good effort but Rabbi hold him off to win by a length. Ruanui was half a length away third, then all close up came
Bright Glow, Talisker, Teri. Merry Damon, Piuthair, Joy Bird, and Merry Mint habbi was a trifle more cramped than usual during his preliminary, but the ground was perfect for him. and when he raced up to the leaders with three furlongs •,.iSV IS ? aekers ' vei'e on good terms with themselves. In the end he won decisively. Shrewd ran a fine race, after covering a good deal of extra ground on the turn. Ruanui also gave a good display' with none of the luck of the race. Bright Glow, threatened danger with three turlongs to go, but then struck trouble. Judged on' this effort a win for her is due at any time. Talisker had every chance, both he and Teri dropping back over the last furlong. Star Stranger, looking bright, was, plugging along in the middle of the field at the finish after being last at the turn. A^crtigern did not show up, and Panther ran one of his typically bad races. Merry Damon was not disgraced by his effort. Keddar showed up very well considering he was racing over a. much longer course than usual. Merry Mint showed up in the middle stages, but did not run on. 24th FEILDING STAKES. Backed down to very decided odds-on Paganelli failed his supporters. Cimabue and Kaihoro paid practically the same prices for first and second. Cimabue jumped out first and Kaihoro soon streaked to the front from Paganelli, Arrowzone. Ceremony, Cimabue, and Princess Betty. Kaihoro led into the straight from Paganelli, Ceremony, Cimabue, and Princess Betty. Paganelli was under pressure when they turned for home, but was not making much impression on Kaihoro. Cimabue then sailed up on the outside, .and went right across Paganelli. Cimabue overhauled Kaihoro and beat her home by a length and a half. Paganelli was two lengths away third, with Princess Betty fourth and Arrowzone, next. Cimabue- showed brilliancy and he would have wan" any way as the race was run. At the same time he took Paganelli's line very sharply, and the incident might have cost Paganelli ■ second place. However, thisl, too, is doubtful, for Paganelli missed the jump-out, and was being ridden too hard at the turn for his legion of backers. Kaihoro showed surprising speed. Princess Betty was slow away and did not hold a winning chance at any stage. The other pair were outclassed. KOWHAI HACK HANDICAP. Masher and Make Up monopolised the betting, ; but at reasonable prices. A poor start saw My Own shdw out first from Meteilus; Goldlike, Don Quixote, Skyrider, Masher, and Chopin. At the six furlong post Gokllike led My Own, Don Quixote, Chopin, Masher, Skyrider. and Latakia, who waa going up fast. Goldlike still led at the hatf-niile from. Latakia, My Own, Chopin, Democratic. Masher, and Make Up. Make; Up kept up his run and was just behind Latakia, Chopin, and Democratic at the torn. Make Up, Chopin, and Democratic had a good tussle over the laat 100 yards, MakeUp beating Chopin by a head with Democratic a head away third. My Own was fourth, and then cama Latakia, Limosa, Masher, Goldlike, and The Mug all well up. Make Up finished well after not being well placed in the initial stages. Chopin ran another really good race, and was prominent throughout. The feature of the race was Democratic's great showing with 31b overweight, and he will be in demand for hurdle races from now on. My Own was most unlucky* in the straight, and she should soon make amends. Latakia was well ridden. Limosa and Masher ran sound races without being good enough Goldlike showed some speed but did not stay on. FLYING HANDICAP. The Silver Paper-Aspiring bracket and The Haider carried the bulk of the investments. The Raider began best from Banket, Llanore, First Money, Gold Cure, Aspiring, and Gold Dawn, with Silver Paper last. Banket took charge to lead across the top from The Raider, First Money, and Llanore, with Gold Cure, Aspiring, and Gold Dawn in line next. Banket turned for home first from The Raider, Llanore, First Money, Gold Dawn, Gold Cure, Arrow Lad (wide out), and Aspiring. The Raider ran to the front with about 200 yards to go, with Gold Cure, Llanore, and Arrow Lad (wide out) all going well. The Raider won by a length from Gold Cure, who got up to beat Llanore by half a length. Arrow<Lad was right up fourth, and then came Gold Dawn, Goshawk, Aspiring, and Silver Paper. The Raider ran up to his horse-for-courso record, and was too brilliant for this field. At the same time, some of the beaten ones will do better before long. Gold Cure stayed on in good style to beat Llanore, who showed plenty.! of dash. Arr,ow Lad was off the eouMe all the way round the turn, and unaer the circumstances his effort was good. He finished on well. Aspiring did not show the expected dash, and was always well back. First Money faded out, but Gold Dawn went a promising race and should win a race, or bo over the holidays. Goshawk finished on^after being back with Silver;. Peak early." V. Carroll, the stable apprentice, rode him on Saturday. FITZROY HACK HANDICAP. Limosin was a pronounced favourite, with Knightlike, Marica, and Clever about equally backed. After a long delay at the barrier, due to Clarendon refusing to Hue up, he eventually • was cut back and was last away. Clever showed out first from Knightlikel, Cuticle, Rule Britannia, Limosin, and Werata. Clever and Paiko led across the top from Knightlike, Cuticle, Limosin, and Rule Britannia. Limosin moved up sharply going to the turn, and challenged Clever, but Clever held him off in the run home to win by a little over a length. Cuticle was three lengths back third, with (Marica fourth, and Clarendon, Knightlike, Werata, and Green Acre were next. , Clever won her race at the start, jumping out clear and holding her advantage all the way. She raced well, and looks like being useful-'this year. Limosin did not commence so well, and ran a fine race. Cuticle's effort suggested that her turn is drawing rapidly closer. Marica and Clarendon both did well to finish tip close behind the placed horses. Knightlike had every chance, but the race will improve him. Rule Britannia and Paiko faded out. Warzone was never prominent. Just So bolted twice round prior to the start, and was withdrawn, investments being refunded. KIWITEA HANDICAP. Otairi and High Falutin' monopolised the betting. King Midas jumped out first, but was 'steadied, and Juggle, Borsalere, and Melissa went past him, with High Falutin' last. Borsalene showed the way down the back to Juggle and Melissa, with King Midas and High Falutin' next. So they raced to the turn. Juggle was doing best of the leaders iv the straight where King-. Midas challenged on the outside and Otairi came fast on the rails . Juggle beat Otairi home by a head, with Melissa . half a length away third and King Midas another half-length back ■ I hen, well in the rear, Borsalene was next, i Juggle ran out the seven furlongs very well, but possibly was lucky to beat Otairi, who came very fast. At the same' i time, he had a great run through on the , rails in the straight. Melissa showed speed ■ iigaiu, and ran v creditable race. Kin" , Midas was not 100 lucky, and should have . done better. High Falutin' was beaten at . tho end of six furlongs. Tlie race will imi prove him.
