AUCKLAND, This Day. An explanation of his absence from the smoke concert tendered to the visiting cross-country runners by the Auckland Athletic Centre, was made yesterday by the president, Mr. A. Tilly. Mr. Tilly, who is also chairman of the Rugby Junior Advisory Board, said that his duties at Eden Park in connection with the Rugby representative match made it impossible for him to carry out his intention to witness the race at Alexandra Park. He hadbeen elected president of the centre in his absence and against his wish as he really could not spare the time to perform the duties. "As far as the evening function is concerned, I have cut out that kind of thing long ago. I do not even go to Rugby functions," said Mr. Tilly. "I was ill when the Americans were in Auckland. Only last Friday I represented the centre at the Dominion Council meeting in Wellington. I have the interests of athletics very much at heart, but cannot afford the necessary time to act in any official capacity. . . To-morrow I shall send in my resignation and settle the matter."
