HUTT VALLEY LAND.

When the Hutt Valley Lands Settlement Amendment Bill was before the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon some objection was taken to the clause providing that if land was not disposed of when offered the capital value might -be immediately reduced. Fears were expressed that the provision might lead to collusion on the part of the bidders. Sir Bobert Stout said he did not understand the desire to get rid of the State's assets. First of all, they proposed to get rid of the national endowments, and now they wanted to get rid of unsold, sections by reducing the price. The Leader of the Council (Sir Heaton Rhodes) said that the Government did not wish to make a profit put of the sale of the sections, the one desire being to see the land settled. The Goment, however, must sell the sections,-in order that they might secure some return for the mon'ey which had been expended in opening up the land. The Bill was passed.
