CHALIAPIN.
According to cable advice received to-day by the lqcal office of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., Theodor Chaliapin, eminent Russian basso, has had to conoel on«) of his Wellington dates. His amended dates are now loth and 18th September. It has been said of Chaliapin, the great singer who is to make his first New Zealand appearance in Wellington at the Grand Opera House on Thursday, 16th September, that he plays bb he wills upon the emotions of his audience He throws the ordinary conventionalities of the concert platform to the winds. Totally free and unreserved, his manner is that of one who is the intimate friend of everyone in the hall, as he comes out beaming, big and imposing in stature, yet delightfully graceful m every movement. As he sings hi3 light blue eyes flash the impassioned fervour of the moment, and his hands are used freely in descriptive gestures. Chaliapin is no less distinguished as an actor than as a singer. The preferential booking will close on Thursday night, and on Friday morning the'ordinary plans for the. two Wellington concerts will open at The Bristol.
