OUTCLASSED

WELLINGTON FAIL IN SHIELD MATCH.

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Conditions were ideal for the first Challenge Shield match of the season between Canterbury and Wellington at Hagley Park, Christchurch, on Saturday afternoon. The ground was in good order, but was bumpy in parts. The teams were:— Wellington. — Brennan (goal),' Hull, Spiers, Lloyd, Webley, Thorpe, Dee, MacDonald, Lusty, Knowles, Hood. Canterbury.—Snooks (foal), Soper, MacDonald, Mahoney, Morris, Hore, Quartermain, Gracie, S. Bell, W. Bell, H. Ford. Wellington took the aggressive -from the bully, but Soper cleared, and Canterbury swept down the field, S. Bell sending across to Ford, who just missed the net. Obstruction averted a dangerous situation in the Wellington twenty-five, but Canterbury returned to the attack, Brennan just saving a hot shot from Ford. The Wellington halves were not intercepting well, and" were beaten time and again for the ball. Spiers, playing wonderful hockey, kept back repeated attacks by the home forwards, but he _ould not prevent Gracie from getting through after a centre from Ford. Canterbury 1, Wellington 0. Canterbury continued to dominate play, Ford eventually nuking an opening from which S. Bell scored again. Canterbury 2, Wellington 0. After this, Wellington showed more dash in their forward play, and for the first time Snooks used his stick to clear a good shot from Macdonald, who was given off-side. There was no further score up to half-time. Canterbury continued to dominate play after the interval, and Wellington got away with the ball only three times. The home half-line w__ magnificent at interception, and beat the Wellington forwards repeatedly. Spectacular hockey was witnessed in this spell, Canterbury having all the advantage. Graci. and S.'Bell added a goal each before the final whistle, while Wellington were unable to open their account. The final score was: Canterbury 4, Wellington 0. Messrs. Gracie and Bellamy were the referees. I
