LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP.
FINAL ENDS IN A DRAW.
.. INVERCARGILL, 4th Sept. The ladies' hockey championship final was played to-day in brilliant sunshine, and on a perfect ground. The teams were Ruahine and Southland A. The latter have held the- championship for the past three years, having annexed it at the Dunedin tournament in 1923, when they defeated Poverty Bay. They succesfully defended their title against Ruahine at both Nelson and Gisborne. To-day's game created considerable interest, the performances of both teams throughout the tournament having been of a high order. _ Throughout the first spell both attacked in a very determined fashion, and only food defensive work kept the score low. quthland obtained the first goal thirteen minutes after the opening with a good forward rush, Miss M'lntyre being responsible. Ruahine kept opening out the play and from a scramble Miss Nellie loreman equalised. Soon after the resumption of play Miss M'Kinnon received an injury but was able to proceed. Ihe scene of play travelled from end to end with lightning speed and some fine individual play was seen. Ruahine pressed in a very determined fashion without result. Then Southland gained the advantage and kept Ruahine defending, Miss Bell preventing trouble on two successive occasions. The game ended without further score. , Each team is entitled to hold the shield for six months.
