SURVEY ALREADY MADE.
Replying, the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates)' said that he was glad to know that they had the. co-operation of the House in regard to retaining the characteristics of the Maoris. The Maoris had always assisted the pakeha in New Zealand, and they also added a picturesqueness to the country. The Maoris had produced some of ■ the Dominion's greatest statesmen. Mr. Coates said he desired to express his appreciation of the assistance given by the Arawa Tribe in connection with the Commission, which had been enabled to get over what had appeared to be almost insuperable difficulties. On every occasion on which New Zealand asked the Maoris to entertain any distinguished visitor .they responded very warmly. , The Government proposed to go right on with the planning of the villages, and to put into effect the. recommendations of the Commission. The Public Works Department had already carried out a survey, and officers of the Department would be delighted to carry out the work.
