A PROPER MODEL.

The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. H. E. Holland) expressed the hope that the proposed villages will be erected on n Maori model, and not on a model that was a cross between Maori and European. He thought that the Maori people should be asked to assist in the work..They owed it not only to the Maori race, but to their own race to preserve the Maori customs as far as possible. The Hon. A. T. Ngata (Eastern Maori) said that the report .made a number of very useful suggestions. The Commission had been made up of men who possessed practical knowledge, but the success of the scheme depended on what action was taken by the Government. He agreed that some attempt should be made to conform as far as possible to Maori ideas, as he thought that in Maori settlements too much had been sacrificed for the sake of modern convenience.
