VOICE OF THE PEOPLE.

The Hon. M. Cohen said he thought thb land question should be buried once and for all. The people had shown in no uncertain manner that they stood for the freehold. Mr. Cohen said it seemed to him that sooner or later, follow-

ing the present move, the municipal, hospital, and other endowments would I be disposed of. The Hon. T. S. Weston said that anybody who had been connected with local bodies knew that most reserves, vested in a local' body did not make sufficient return for their value.. All the national endowment lands were poor country, and the Government was doing a wise thing. The Hon. W. H. M'ln tyre supported the Bill, but said he would, like to see its principle extended to the Westport Colliery reserves leaseholds. The Hon. G.» J. Garland said that any leaseholder who .had had experience of the freehold would not want any more of the leasehold. The people of New Zealand had been hungry for the freehold for twenty years. The leasehold policy "in New Zealand was blown out, and the people were tired of it, as was indicated at 'the General Elections for years past. The Hon. F. Mander said the freehold was the settled policy of tho country, and no amount of talk would alter it. The arguments against the freehold came principally from people who had never cultivated the soil. The Council was whipping a dead horse.
