MAIN HIGHWAYS.
In moving the second reading of the Main Highways Bill in the House of Representatives last night, *the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. K. 8. .Williams) statod that although authority was being given to the board to'lend up to £50,000 to local bodies,- itr Was not proposed that the board should become, a general lending body. Difficulties, however, had arisen in getting certain local bodies to raise the necessary finance to carry out works, and the board thought that if the power proposed in the Bill were' given, it might bo able to make arrangements with the local bodies to provide them with money to get on with their undertakings. The Bill also empowered the board to contribute towards the maintenance of bridges which ,were, too costly for local bodies to maintain. Another clause enabled the board to given, larger subsidy than 30s in the' £ v He thought, it would be agreed that the board had done good work. The amendments proposed would assist its operations. . . The Bill was read a second time.
