WORSE THAN WAS THOUGHT
DEVASTATED ZONE FRAUDS,
LONDON 19th January.' The Morning Post's" Paris correspondent says that the commission at Lille investigating the alleged frauds m the devastated regions is finding the task enormously greater than was anticipated.
A typical example of the allegations concerns a textile mill. Immediately after the Armistice the proprietor reported that the mill was intact to the last pm, and could resume operations immedUt two years later he claimed (1)0,000 francs for material damages and 4,000,000 for supplementary damages. The local authorities" passed the former claim, but sent the latter to the Ministry in Paris, which not only sanctioned, but increased, the 4,000,000 claim.
The commissioners are astounded to discover in the cases probed up to the present that the approximate 'claims for war damages made in 1917 had by 1920----2. been multiplied 10, 20, SO, and in some cases hundredfold. A large "number of arrests is expected.
