"COULD NOT PART WITH THEM"

■LONDON, Bth July: In connection with the sale of Sir Joseph Robinson's pictures, it is learned that he stored them in 1912 and did not see them again until they were ranged on the walls at Christie's for sale. Using a wheeled chair he, went 'round the .gallery, and was so struck with their beauty that he felt he could not part with them, and decided to retain the best. Connoisseurs from all parts of Europe and America were crowding, the rooms, unaware that many successful bids were from agents'acting on Sir Joseph Robinson's ■ behalf. Mr. ■ Khocdler, of New York, secured most of the other, pictures. All the., pictures showed big advances on the prices paid by Sir Joseph Robinson. A pathetic feature of the sale was the number of members of well-known aristocratic families attending the sale to fret a climpse of pictures which once were fiimily possessions'. Some women were overheard ■ saying : "I can remember that- in our house when I was a, girl.".

.After the sale Sir Joseph' Robinson told the "Sunday Express":—"l have bisr intentions for the balance .of the pictures, which number 170,- and are worth several millions of pounds. I intend to lease a pallery and let tho public see them. Under certain legal entailments. lone since drawn up, they v.-ill pass to my. heirs. In the mellow' liirht" of Christie's they 'looked so beautiful I could not uart with them.."' ,'
