.VERY POOR SCORES.

The Welcome Week golf handicap j tournament, arranged, by the Miramar I Club, was commenced this morning un- | der conditions which were not as good jas they might have been. There was a | fairly strong, wind from the south, and light rain fell at intervals. ' Some fifty players,, including a number of visitors, are competing in the main events -which commenced this morning, and will be continued on Thursday and Friday. This morning's events were the qualifying round of the Welcome Week Handicap, in which tho sixteen with'the best net aggregate scores over 36 holes qualify, and the Minimal- Golf Club handicap for i the best net score over 36 holes. i Many of the players, particularly those who got away early found that it was bitterly cold. As teeing-up was not allowed, good scores were not to be expected. The first two back were the two " plus men, A. D. S. Duncan, and T. 11. Horton. ■; Duncan had the almost, unbelievable score of. 15 strokes over bogey, f bis handicap adding three strokes, and giving him a net score of 98. He had a run of bad lies, and rjissed a number of short putts. Horton had a very bad half to start, taking 50 for the first nine, hut he made a remarkable recovery, ■ and came home in 38—2 under bogey. Even allowing handicaps, but a very • small percentage of the players who were ■ in by' 1 p.m.. showed scores under /30. None of the players with handicaps over nine were back at that time. j The best net scores this morning up ; to that time were as follow:—G. L. Culhberlson 85, K. D. Duncan 87, J. H. Drake .88, J. B. Parker 88, W. B. Speedy 89.

The weather conditions at the commencement of the afternoon round were considerably improved.
